Practical Strategies for Solopreneurs in Lean Times

growth mindset mindset resilience Aug 01, 2025

During our meetings last month, some of you shared very vulnerably about how difficult things are at the moment. When there's not enough clients or customers it feels scary, desperate and the panic sets in. There's a sense of urgency to everything you do, even some desperation. It creates an energy of contraction, tightness, gripping and disappointment.

I don’t know a single entrepreneur or solopreneur that hasn’t experienced this at some point. There’s been many times when I found myself slumped, crying, having tried extremely hard, putting in a lot of hours and effort, and not had the outcome or results that I'd hoped for or wanted.

A few years ago I was feeling that intensely. I was trying to offer too many things to too many audiences. I was overwhelmed and confused and not really getting anywhere. I had offers for corporates, for 1-1 package and a group program and a retreat. It was just too much. Just because I 'could' provide all of those things, didn't mean that I 'should' offer them. I knew I had to choose a niche but it was really hard to get my head around. I feared I was cutting off huge potential audiences and putting myself at a disadvantage. What made me carry on and explore this was the trust in experts that told me this was the way to go. And they were right, because in the end it was much easier to focus on one offering at a time. Focusing my energy on one thing, doing it well, consistently, was what paid off in the end.

Part of the journey of working for yourself is failing. I don’t think we talk about it enough, but the very essence of trying something new and creating your own life and work is that there will be times when it doesn’t go the way you'd hoped, but sometimes it works out even better than you thought. And of course, sometimes it works out differently that you'd planned but the outcome is a positive one.

I heard Stephen Bartlett talking about this the other day. Being able to manage uncertainty is one of the cornerstones of entrepreneurism. Managing that constant state of uncertainty can be exhausting if we don’t have mindsets and tools to come back to in those moments of doubt and fear.

Create a daily gratitude practice. Reach out to a mentor, coach or therapist to talk openly about how you feel. Prioritise the tasks that will move you forward and that feel right. All of these practical things help in cultivating resilience against uncertainty.

Of course, in life, nothing is certain.

When we look at nature, it’s chaos. Yet everything grows and survives in its own time in its own way. As Lao Tzu said, “Nature does not rush, yet everything is accomplished.”

We also can't force success. There needs to be an element of letting go in that process. A sense of being open, trusting, welcoming and receiving of opportunities, money and clients/ customers.

That’s not to say that hard work isn't essential, but it's the way that we show up to that hard work. Are we taking aligned action or are we scrambling around scattering our efforts with a sense of “this has to work“?

When we're always taking action from a place of reaction, it can feel chaotic, misaligned and stressful. If we take time to create space in our mind and a sense of grounding in our body, we can find the answers that will help us to move forward more easily.

Whenever you feel overwhelm, panic or fear, STOP.

Put everything down, step back from what you're doing, take some deep breaths and go for a walk. This shifts the stuck energy and allows you to disrupt loop thinking that feeds the overwhelm. Return to your task when you feel ready with curiosity and even a beginners mind.

When there are dips in our business we can be more able to cope with and move through those times without deep fear, panic and disappointment if we've practiced feeling abundant and grateful and open. do this but simply thinking about a time when things flowed for you and were plentiful. When you felt content and appreciative of what you have. The more we practice connecting to these qualities the easier it is to bring them to the present moment when you need them in times of panic and contraction.

These are the types of practices we explore in our monthly Master Your Mind sessions. This month it's on VALUE on 5th August. We'll be exploring our value in our work and lives. We’ll look at how our sense of self can sometimes hold us back, how defensiveness shows up, and simple mindful ways to create more ease and presence with yourself in order to create the life you want. Something else that’s helped me in the past is Human Design. Two years ago I didn’t even know what Human Design was but now I feel it really supports my journey as an entrepreneur because I understand myself more deeply, how I make decisions, and it's validated the way I approach and see the world, and how I interact with others.

Understanding your Human Design profile as a solopreneur is like having your own personal roadmap for running your business with more clarity and alignment. Instead of pushing against how you naturally work, you learn to harness your innate strengths, make decisions that feel genuinely right for you, and manage your energy effectively. It's a great tool for reducing overwhelm and burnout. It will connect you to your authenticity, help you feel more confident and joy for your work! Our expert guest this month is Mathilde Froget who is a Human Design coach. She'll be sharing how to integrate elements of your human design into your business to help it thrive. More info and RSVP here

✨ But for now I invite you to return to any grounding or spaciousness practice that you have to deepen that sense of self and trust in yourself so that you can create the life you want...
